Pitch Perfect

Academic promotion?

We help women tackle text and context with confidence

Promotion represents one of many important milestones on the academic career pathway, and successfully navigating this application process requires skills in both writing and strategy. How to craft a compelling story about your academic achievements and contributions on the page? And how to deal with contextual factors that may impact your application?

This workshop draws on years of experience in crafting promotion applications with women academics at all career levels, and in coaching women for their promotion application interviews. A central insight that participants will reflect on: “Success” is not just about those vital performance metrics, but it is also – and crucially! – about crafting a compelling leadership story, particularly when progressing from mid-career to more senior roles.

We equip participants with a range of practical tools and action steps for planning their promotion application well ahead of time, for thinking through the impact of their achievements, for clearly defining their vision, and for getting the feedback and support they need to maximise chances of success. In short, this workshop will see women confidently tackle text and context, for the best possible outcome they dare to envision.

Note: To be released in both in-house and online formats, this course is currently in development.

NEW! Seeking participants!

In recognition of ongoing gender imbalance at leadership levels in STEAMM disciplines, we are developing an in-house and online workshop aimed at supporting women through the academic promotion application process.

We are currently seeking input from women academics willing to fill in an anonymous online survey about their promotion application experiences. Those completing the survey can choose to go into the draw to win one of several prizes, which include:

One free (!) edit of a promotion application (valued at $2,000), and

One of 50 free seats on the online promotion application course (valued at $385 per seat).

All prizes will be drawn by COB Wednesday, 31 July 2019. Responses received after that date will not be considered.

Why do we target women? Don’t men need support with their promotion applications?

They probably do. Our focus on women is not exclusionary in spirit (we do work with men on their promotion applications too), but motivated by two insights: First, the notable under-representation of women in academic leadership positions in STEAMM disciplines in Australia; and second, a commitment to the value of gender equity, which allows us to recognise and meet different needs among diverse groups as we strive to achieve equality.

On the journey to a more inclusive, equitable environment in STEAMM, we approach some pragmatic aspects of our course offering by asking: “Who is excluded by current structures and culture, and thus needs this targeted support to navigate academic promotion?”

In designing the survey and course for women, we are guided by the Women in STEM Decadal Plan Discussion Paper, where the term “women” encompasses cisgender, transgender, non-binary, and intersex persons who identify as women. In the same Paper, equity is defined as “fairness of treatment, regardless of gender, according to respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations and opportunities.”

By seeking women’s views on what helped or hindered their success, we hope to develop a course that reflects women’s real needs at a crucial and recurring time in their careers. Ultimately, we hope that our course will make a humble contribution to addressing the ongoing gender imbalance at leadership levels in STEAMM disciplines in Australian universities.

Through gender equity, gender equality is possible.
